A Death Note Game Receives Rating for PS4 and PS5 in Taiwan
A potential new Death Note game might be in development, based on a listing by the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee.
According to a report from Gematsu, the committee has rated a yet-to-be-announced Death Note game for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Bandai Namco is identified as the publisher, and IGN has reached out to them for further details.
Gematsu also highlighted that the game’s title, as translated from the ratings board, appears to be Death Note: Shadow Mission. Interestingly, rumors started swirling earlier this year when manga publisher Shueisha filed trademark applications for the title Death Note: Killer Within in Europe, Japan, and the U.S., fueling further speculation.
This latest update is perhaps the clearest indication yet that a new Death Note game could be on the horizon. The original Death Note manga, which ran from 2003 to 2006, tells the story of Light Yagami, a brilliant young man who discovers a supernatural notebook belonging to the shinigami Ryuk. The notebook grants him the power to kill anyone by simply writing their name in it, sparking a tense battle of wits between Light and an eccentric detective known as L, along with a Japanese task force.
The manga's success led to a popular anime adaptation, three live-action films in Japan, and a 2017 live-action remake by Netflix. Additionally, Konami released three Death Note-themed games for the Nintendo DS. In 2022, Netflix announced another live-action project, this time a series helmed by the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer brothers.
While the listing from the ratings board doesn't officially confirm the game's release, it's clear that interest in the Death Note franchise remains strong, even nearly two decades after the original manga's conclusion.
